Environmental harms. Training a single large language model can emit over 600,000 pounds of CO₂. That’s roughly five times what a car produces over its entire lifetime — for one training run. A well-designed AI system handling routine customer queries in a low-stakes environment is a completely different risk calculation than an AI system making preliminary credit decisions about loan applicants. Same technology family. Completely different exposure.

Tableau’s analysis of AI risks and benefits reframes the question more usefully: is the specific system you’re deploying, in the specific context, with the actual safeguards you have in place, likely to do more good than harm? That’s answerable. The abstract version isn’t.

The case for benefits is real and not overstated. Deloitte’s 2026 State of AI report found 66% of organisations have achieved measurable productivity and efficiency gains — not from flashy transformation projects, but from replacing slow manual processes with AI that runs faster and makes fewer simple errors. Drug discovery timelines are shortening. Supply chain forecasting models are cutting waste in ways that compound over time. None of this is speculative.

What is speculative — or at least still mostly aspirational — is the deeper transformation.
